Ever feel like you missed out on something fun? Well, that's the basic premise of Booksmart. But don't let the name of this film fool you. This movie is anything but "booksmart". Instead, it is just silliness galore, or perhaps even stupidity. Weirdly, though, it all sort of works.
The movie is based around the friendship of two graduating high schoolers, Amy (played by Kaitlyn Dever) and Molly (played by Beanie Feldstein). They have dedicated their high school years to doing well in school so that they can attend top name colleges, and it worked. Amy has benn accepted into Columbia University while Molly is class valedictorian and entering Yale in the fall. However, just when they are about to graduate, they discovered that many of thier classmates are also attending top colleges despite having spent much of their time partying. Immediately, Molly feels cheated having missed out, and the two embark on a crazy night to attend a cool party before graduating the next day.
If you are the kind of person who looks for an interesting plot in a movie, you won't find it here. Looking for inspirational moments, you won't find that either. Character development? A little at most. So what can one expect then? Simple. Nonstop, raunchy jokes and silliness. Personally, I would have preferred if some time had been spent showing the audience what the girls had to endure over the last few years. But again, I guess it is not that kind of movie. Just jokes about sex, drugs, and teenage stupidity. With that said, some of those jokes are pretty funny. So if nothing else, the movie is entertaining in that regard.
Now, based on what I just said, it sounds like I didn't like the movie. Well, I wouldn't say that. Basically, the movie did what it was meant to do - give the audience a good laugh as our brains shuts off for an hour and a half. So would I recommend this movie? Yes, but only with the understanding of what type of movie this is. If you are looking for anything deeper than a two inch puddle, you are going to be disappointed. But for a nonstop onslaught of crude and perhaps even vulgar humor, Booksmart will definitely do the trick.
