Young Sheldon

With heavyweights like The Big Bang Theory ending last year and Modern Family showing its age, it is not obvious which is the number one sitcom this 2019-2020 season. So we crunched some numbers, and here are the top 5 winners:

1. Young Sheldon

I guess it is fitting that Young Sheldon is the number one sitcom. After all, it is a spinoff of The Big Band Theory, a former number one sitcom itself. (The Big Bang Theory ended its twelve year run last season.) It is about the life of a young Sheldon Cooper, a boy genious growing up in a loving but relatively mudane household in Texas.

2. Mom

I was surprised to see Mom on this list. After all, the show is already in its seventh season. And for most sitcoms, their popularity would have waned by now. However, this show seems to be just hitting its stride. Gone are are the days of when the show featured Christy Plunkett's children like in the first few seasons. Instead, the show now centers around Christy, her mom, and their friends from Alcolholics Anonymuos as they deal with life post-alcoholism.

3. The Unicorn

This freshman comedy follows a family trying to cope with life after the tragic death of the mother. This might not sound like the premise for a traditional sitcom. That's because it is not. The Unicorn is more so a charming story depicting a single father, Wade Felton, as he learns how to deal with his teenage daughters as well as how to get back into the dating scene. It is still a comedy, though, so there are plenty of funny moments throughout, especially as Wade's friends try to help him is unusal ways.

4. The Neighborhood

Now in its second season, The Neighborhood seems to be enjoying a nice steady fanbase. The story centers around a overtly friendly guy from the Midwest, Dave Johnson, who moves his family to a much more urban neighborhood in Los Angeles. Although met with cynicism at first, the Johnsons eventually befriend their next door neighbor Calvin Butler and his family.

5. The Conners

There has definitely been plenty of controversy around this show. After the very heavily publicized reboot of the Roseanne sitcom from the 1980's/1990's, the new Roseanne was a hit. However, due to controversial comments by the show's star, Roseanne Barr, the show had to be repackaged as The Conners as the star was written off the series. The show still seems to be going strong, though, as it is currently in its second season. It portays the Connor family, a working class household constantly struggling to make ends meet in the small town of Lanford, Illinois.
