This week, Dynamite lost a big chuck of the audience that it had gained the previous week while NXT's ratings only fell slightly. (See graph above.) This made the battle in this week's Wednesday Night Wars extremely close. In the end, Dynamite was still able to come out ahead, but it was only by a mere 15,000 viewers. Here are the details.
Dynamite's viewership fell significantly from 827,000 last week to 730,000 this week. That's a big drop of 11.7%. Thw show's 18-49 demographics rating fell by a similar margin. It went down from 0.32 last week to 0.29 this week.
NXT's viewership fell as well, but by a much smaller margin. It fell from last week's 731,000 viewers to this week's 715,000 viewers. That a small drop of 2.2%. Despite the smaller audience, however, the show's 18-49 demographics rating actually increased a bit. It went up from last week's 0.19 to this week's 0.2.
Dynamite's big decrease was actually a little surprising. After all, this week's episode had two championship matches, a TNT Championship match between Cody and Jungle boy and a Tag Team Championship match between Omega/Page and Sabian/Havoc. Although the outcome of those matches were never really in doubt, it was still the first time that Kenny Omega and Hangman Page appeared as a tag team in months. Over on the USA network, NXT's main event was the interim Cruiserwight Championship match, and this was also the go-home show before the promotion's Takeover: In Your House event this weekend. Perhaps this was a factor why NXT didn't see as big a drop in the ratings.
Previously, we theorized that AEW's rise in the ratings last week was in part due to Mike Tyson and the press coverage that his involvement in AEW has received. Well, with this episode's corresponding ratings drop (an episode which did not include an appearance from Tyson), it looks like that may indeed have been the case. It is also possible, of course, that this week's drop was just a fluke. If it isn't, though, we might be seeing NXT's first ratings win in almost two months very soon. After all, Dynamite was only able to barely squeak out a victory this week. On the flip side, however, NXT's ratings might not fare as well next week since it won't have the benefit of being the go-home show before a Takeover event. So it could be anybody's game next week.
Elsewhere in the world of wrestling, Raw's ratings pretty much held steady, but Smackdown saw a big bump for some reason.
Compared to last week, the size of Raw's audience went down very slightly falling from 1,735,000 viewers last week to 1,728,000 viewers this week. That's an insignificant 0.4%. The change in this episode's 18-49 demographics rating was slightly larger. It fell from 0.51 last week to 0.49 this week.
Smackdown's audience, on the other hand, jumped by a big 6.2%. It grew from last week's 2,044,000 viewers to this week's 2,170,000 viewers. This is the show's highest rating in over a month. Similarly, there was also an increase in Smackdown's 18-29 demographics rating. It went up from 0.5 to 0.6.
Although Dynamite's audience was only 2.1% larger than that of NXT's this week, this does extend AEW's winning streak to seven weeks in a row. The win-loss record for Dynamite in the Wednesday Night Wars now stands at 29-5-1 for viewership and 34-1 for the 18-49 demographic. In turn, NXT's win-loss record is now 5-29-1 for viewership and 1-34 for the 18-49 demographic.
